CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis of the super computer room

Synopsis

The project consists of the new super computer room and labs at Oxford University’s Begbroke Science Park.

The super computer facility consists of 56 no. server racks each generating 11kW of heat and a total heat gain of over 600kW.

Best in class

Because of the huge heat gain to a relatively small room and the maximum operating temperatures of the server racks, it was crucial that adequate cooling was received at the face of each rack.

A CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation was preformed to calculate/predict that each rack will achieve adequate cooling.

The simulation highlighted the need for a number of minor amendments to the locations of the grilles, down-flow units and server racks.

Had this simulation not been performed, the cost to make such changes retrospectively would have been a very costly exercise.

Anderson Green Duties:
Production of fully coordinated /working drawings.

Synopsis

G Park Chatterly Valley, Gazeley’s Flag Ship logistics development, is a new distribution centre with office accommodation.

Working very closely with the construction team to build on time and within budget whilst meeting the strict sustainability criteria, Anderson Green supplied: Feasibility costs; Cost certainty; Value engineering; Design and coordination of mechanical & electrical systems and Production of Operating & Maintenance manuals.

Key parts of the project included: On site biomass micro power station; ETFE solar cell technology implanted into special roof-lights which eliminate night time light pollution yet let natural daylight into the warehouse during the day; PV Solar Panels; Solar Thermal Hot Water; Rain Water Harvesting; Advanced Building Monitoring System, including a display unit in the reception detailing building loads, energy production, quantity of energy exportation etc. Kinetic plates which capture energy every time a vehicle enters or leaves the site.

Best in class

The Greenest building of its type in Europe, and one of the greenest facilities in the world, G Park became the first development in the world to be awarded the new BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) “Outstanding” rating (design stage), the highest sustainable accolade available in property development.

The development employs a host of renewable sources which Anderson Green had to bring together to create the UK’s first truly carbon positive development.

G Park exceeds the UK Government’s Climate Change Bill targets for both 2020 and 2050 in 2009. This not only delivers significant environmental savings, it also creates total energy and water cost in use savings of up to £300,000 per annum.
