Anderson Green’s Inclusive Armed Forces Culture

Anderson Green fully recognises that the Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the UK Nation to ensure that those who Serve or who have Served in the UK Armed Forces including their Families are treated with the utmost respect, dignity and fairness. We also recognise the valuable sacrifice and contribution that all members of our Armed Forces make to the United Kingdom through their Service and we have signed the Armed Forces Covenant to reflect this; this is our pledge to support the Armed Forces Community, Veterans and their Families.

We acknowledge that the Armed Forces Covenant develops a reciprocal, mutual-working relationship with the Armed Forces Community; including those who work in our organisation or access our products and services. As part of our pledge, we continually support the employment of Armed Forces Veterans, those employees who choose to be members of the Reserve Forces, Service Spouses and Partners, Cadet organisations either in the local community or local schools, where possible. We also actively advocate and promote that we are a Forces-friendly organisation and participate in the both the Armed Forces Day and Reserves Day by championing our Armed Forces personnel.

We fully recognised and acknowledge the Employer Recognition Scheme as an award at all levels as it encourages employers to support UK Defence and inspire others to do so. Award recipients are recognised as organisations that have pledged, demonstrated or advocated support to UK Defence and the wider Armed Forces Community, and have aligned their values with the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC).

Our pledge includes:

Actively recruit Ex-Forces Service Leavers in preparation for work within our design organisation; including the guaranteed interview scheme for military personnel who meet the job role criteria. Currently, we have employed 5 ex-Forces personnel with a further 2 identified from June 2022 with a programme of works experience.
Readily integrate with a Service Leavers resettlement process offering work experience as Veterans transition from the Forces. Regular, in-house CPD aligned with civilian engineers is provided to translate military skills and qualifications for employers to recognise.
Proactively promote the wider Armed Forces community, Armed Forces Day and Reserves Day through our website and internally. Collectively our Veterans, ARes and Office Staff pay their respects on Remembrance Day to acknowledge the sacrifices made by all; with our Armed Forces champion involved in coordinating memorial participation within the midlands region.
Educate staff so that they understand issues the Armed Forces community may face, provide regular email updates and briefings regarding ARes deployments.
Advertise daily our commitment to the wider Armed Forces community, Reserves, CFAV and Spouses through our Defence webpage.
Actively support Armed Forces Charities with events and sponsorship; currently we are supporting the “True Heroes Racing” season with £5000 of sponsorship. Preparation is being finalised for a SSAFA charity event for both the Leeds and Nottingham Offices in July 2022.
Allow Veterans to pursue CPD opportunities and complete any Enhanced Leaning Credit opportunities. We ease the burden of these pre-paid ELC courses providing paid leave, travel, subsistence and office resources to complete their chosen course. This is also mirrored for ARes annual allocation of Standard Learning Credits courses.
Advertise and undertake Work Industry Placements for Regular Army Units at our Nottingham office, to learn and mutually support Industry practices whilst working on the MoD / Defence Estate and undertaken with Units from 170 Engineer Group, Nottingham.
The Directors and Armed Forces Champion have actively coached and mentored similar civilian construction companies within the Midlands Region to sign up to the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC), with progression through the ERS tiers.
Throughout 2022, we are facilitating work experience placements to ex members of the forces who are keen to carry on their careers within construction.

Previously we have undertaken this in earnest transitioning our Senior Project Manager from the Regular Army in 2020 to 2021 and diligently set about nurturing that talent during two months of resettlement into our Defence Department through work experience. That ex-Forces mentoring culture is now shared and supported across the entire business by all Staff.

We actively encourage members of staff to join the Reserve Forces. During 2021 we have coached and mentored one of our Principal Electrical Engineers from a civilian to Army Reservists who has now completed 14 days of leave for phased training, 10 days of Military Foundation training and a 3 week deployment to Monserrat; all this in a first year in uniform.

Our current members of staff include an all-Royal Engineers (RE) Army Reservists and Veterans connection, headed by our Defence Director (an RE Lieutenant Colonel and our Armed Forces Champion), an Army Reservists RE Captain (as PM), an Army Reservists RE Sergeant (as PM), an Army Reservists RE Corporal (as Digital Design Engineer), an RE Army Reservist Lance Corporal (as Principal Electrical Engineer) and finally an Ex Regular Army RE Major (now PM) as our Veterans Champion.

Commencing in 2014, we have proudly supported our employees who choose to serve as part of the Reserve Forces, supporting them with their mobilisation and annual training requirements.

Additional Paid Annual Leave:

We provide paid time off to employees who are Reservists or Adult Cadet Force Volunteers. For example, we offer 14 days per annum of additional Paid Leave who are Reservists or Adult Cadet Force Volunteers to enable them to undertake training.

Promoting Armed Forces Day and Reserves Day:

Every year, we run our internal “Proud to Support Week” campaign, which takes place in the run up to Armed Forces Day. During this week, we encourage our employees to volunteer and raise funds for Armed Forces charities. The week also features “Reserves Day” where we celebrate the contribution made by Reservists to the Armed Forces and our employee Reservists can wear their uniforms to work.
